“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”
Pawnee Buttes are two isolated formations located 1:45 minutes east of Fort Collins on the high plains. Consisting of two erosional remnants marking the former height of the surrounding area. The lower portions of the buttes are composed of relatively soft, clay-rich sedimentary rock, while the top portion is protected by an overlying layer of sandstone more resistant to weathering.
Located at the end of several dusty back roads, the easy 4.1 roundtrip hike offers long vistas of the surrounding plains, opportunities for bird watching and in the spring and early summer, spectacular flower displays.
